I sell cameras at my job. HDMI is only really necessary if you definitely intend to hook the camera up to an HD tv. Don’t worry about that right away. There’s ways around it. And AAs > rechargeables like Sony cameras. Rechargeables are a pain in the ass to find and expensive whereas AAs are everywhere. As far as sound; it’s stereo recording so it won’t get thrown into one speaker. The camera is a great buy. Next step… EOS

Does anyone know if it’s the same microphones as on the S5 IS? Because they are really bad at high sound levels (conserts)

Thanks for sharing. I also plan to get this. I’ve used all Canon point-and-shoot digital cameras ever since, then jumped to Nikon D40 DSLR. But since I’m only a hobbyist photographer, and I love the long-range zoom, this is what I plan to get next. I’m so excited and I envy you very much. Hehe! =D Enjoy shooting!

The huge zoom was also the reason I have ordered this camera. I currently have a 4mp 10x optical zoom that i’ve had for about 6 years so it was definitely time for an upgrade.

The paper manual in the box is really only a ‘getting started’ guide and doesnt cover the more advanced features of this camera. The full manual is a pdf file on the disk that comes in the box so if you want the full manual which is 179 pages you’ll have to print it out yourself or get a friend to do it if you dont have a computer and printer. There is no HDMI cable or memory card in the box when you buy it so these wlll be extra expenses you’ll have to take into account.

I prefer the AA bats. I carry 2 extra rechargeable sets, which cost me less than $20, while two proprietary bats, like for instance on Panny’s, would probably be at least $60. Also, in a pinch, I can just throw in some Alkalines.

Not really a problem. You can get AA’s almost anywhere on the planet! It also takes 300+ shots with these batteries at the highest settings so I really dont think its necessary to go out and buy a charger and rechargables.

One other thing you should remember about this camera is that it DOESN’T come with any internal memory so an sd card will be essential.

Unless you plan on connecting it directly to your TV, you wont need an HDMI cable.I have the Canon VIXIA HG20 camcorder and the USB cord will transfer the HD directly to your computer with no problem.Just thought I’d point that out, though you probably already know it.
