IF you tried to record over the internet (for some strange reason ?? ) then your recording capability is only as good as your internet connection. It is nothing to do with the reliability of the NVR. However if you are in the 0.00001 % of installs out there that wants to record remotely get cameras like Mobotix with internal storage on a ring buffer. They will hold their footage until remote storage comes back online. Alternatively record locally and archive remotely. Or just record locally.

ok if i want the best video i should go with ip megapixel cams but i would have to use a nvr. So Can i use a nvr in my home without having it connected to the internet?

You can use either a NVR, or a DVR/NVR Hybrid like the PC-Witness Pro. A DVR/NVR hybrid gives you the best of both worlds, as they are designed to work with both analog & IP cameras. Although the PC-Witness can record megapixel IP cameras in their native resolution, many other NVRs & Hybrids dumb-down the signal to lower resolution. Be careful to select a MP IP camera that can see well in low light! I highly advise that recording be done via LAN & NOT via the Internet!

Note: MP IP cameras offer an unsurpassed picture quality, however, the “inexpensive” starter-models typically do NOT preform well in low light. Be ready to spend more money for a good low light model. At current, main-stream MP IP cameras are considerably larger than analog cameras, and may take away from the aesthetics of your house. Be prepared, as MP IP cameras can eat 2x ~ over 5x the amount of HD space vs an analog camera. Do NOT use an external HD as your primary storage drive!

Yes, IP cameras CAN greatly out preform analog cameras in terms of picture resolution… especially when you consider newer mega pixel IP cameras. However, most IP cameras sold today for small business/ residential users max at D1, and are not practical for applications involving little light. REGARDLESS of the resolution, an IP camera does you no good should it fail to record due to network / Internet related issues! When installing a CCTV system, its about what is most practical AND reliable.

Let me ask you a question – if the NVR is being recorded to locally, at the SAME site where the IP cameras are installed – as is the case in 90% of the time, (as only an complete idiot would have setup the system to record over the Internet from the IP cameras to a primary recording server offsite), where is the routing and Internet outage issues you keep waffling on about?

We have found just the opposite as many of our small business clients (especially those with multiple business locations) wish to record off-site. Typically, it is only after we explain to them the dangers of off-site recording that they decide to do the master recording on-site using either analog cameras and a DVR or analog & IP cameras w/ an NVR/DVR Hybrid, with redundant recording off-site. I prefer to only recommend IP cameras when analog cameras are not practical.

Maxydog – I am NOT suggesting that IP cameras can only be recorded via the Net. I suggest you watch the video again. Again, I cut this video with the AVERAGE user in mind. Somebody who is using a consumer-grade router. REGARDLESS of whether the video is recorded via an internal network OR the Net, the data flows through the router. You have several points of failure unique to IP cameras: 1) the actual streaming engine, 2) the router, and 3) the Net (IF… IF recording remotely).

Oh, well it’s perfectly rational to make an argument against a customers magical perception of how the world works. Nobody in their right mind would record a megapixel camera over the internet. An NVR is identical in funtionality (and location) as a DVR. The only difference is the resolution and medium used.
